Biltong Slabs – FAQs

How long do biltong slabs last once opened?
Once opened, we recommend consuming your slab within 3 days for the best taste and texture.

How should I store my biltong slab before opening?
Keep it in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. A pantry or cupboard is perfect. No need to refrigerate until opened.

What’s the best way to store it after opening?

  • Wrap the slab loosely in butcher’s paper or a breathable bag (avoid sealing in plastic as it traps moisture).

  • Store in the fridge to slow down drying and preserve freshness.

Why shouldn’t I keep it in plastic once opened?
Plastic traps moisture, which can cause mould to develop. Biltong needs to breathe, so butcher’s paper or parchment is best.

My slab has gone quite dry – is it still safe to eat?
Yes! Some people even prefer their biltong on the drier side. As long as it has been stored correctly and shows no signs of mould, it’s good to go.

What’s the shelf life before opening?
Check the Best Before date on your packaging (usually 1 month from the packing date).
